FAQ

Questions, answered

What is a good readability score?

For most web pages, emails and general audiences, aim for a Flesch-Kincaid grade of 8 or lower and a Flesch Reading Ease of 60 or higher. Technical or academic writing can score higher, but shorter sentences and everyday words help every reader.

Which formula should I use?

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is the most widely used. Dale-Chall is good for school texts, SMOG for health information, Spache for young readers and FORCAST for forms and technical documents. The consensus grade combines eight formulas.

Is my text safe?

Yes. All scores are calculated in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Only if you create a share link is the text saved on our server, where anyone with the link can see it until it expires.

Which files can I upload?

Plain text (.txt, .md), HTML, PDF and Word (.docx) files. Text is extracted on your device.

Is it free?

Yes. Every tool on Readabilit is free to use, with no sign-up needed. An optional account lets you manage your shared texts.
